How on earth can any intelligent person be a Republican?
I know some otherwise very smart people who are Republicans.
I don't get it.
I just said they are otherwise "very smart people" I am obviously not saying they are "no more than idiots".

When a person is _young_, that person cares about everything and everyone. He is so open minded that everything falls out.
If a person does not go through a liberal/socialistic stage, he has no heart.
when a person is _older_, that person begins to understand how the world works. He still cares, but knows that government interference is not the answer.
If a person does not reach this stage, he has no brain.
Sometimes, a person gets to the point at which he cares only about himself. His mind is like a steel trap but is rusted shut. He knows that socialism is not the answer just as the moderate knows but does nothing about it. He also knows that unfettered commercialism is not the answer but he gets his money from that.
_THIS_ person is the fascist that the younger libs are screaming about.
Note that there is no difference, to the general population, between fascism and socialism. Both systems produce tyranny, one by business and the other by government.
The U.S.A. is near the business side while the socialist countries of the world are touting how great the government-run services are.
Both are lies.
Now, how can smart people attach themselves to _either_ side of the aisle?

Generally speaking, all of political thought cannot be divided into just two sides. There are many issues and many different positions on each issue.
Yet there are only two political parties in this country which typically have major support, and the system is winner-take-all.
This means that almost all Americans have to make compromises. Of the many issues before them, they will probably find that they agree with one party on one, and another one on another. They have to decide, then, what is ultimately more important.
The Republican party, in the loosest possible terms, are fiscally and socially conservative. The bulk of their constituency are thus businessmen and religious folk respectively.
Can you really say that there is absolutely nothing that any Republican says that you agree with? Try not to oversimplify.

maybe because they feel they will do better under a Republican Government, and some are even good hearted enough to believe other Republicans care about ordinary people
-that would account for 5% at most.
The other 95% are indeed stupid, like turkeys voting for an early thanksgiving.
Mind you, the Democrats are just as bad.
The false two party system is created by the people who control both parties.
It's a bit like pro wrestling.
It gives the ordinary folk someone to cheer for.
And the delusion that their vote actually means something.
I wonder that more people haven't caught onto that since Obama has proved to be in exactly the same peoples' pockets as Bush..

I often wonder the same about Democrats. I tend to usually vote Republican because I am very fiscally conservative and believe in less government control. By the way I have a MBA.

I'm a "liberal" and even I find this highly offensive. Why try to typecast those with different views as no more than idiots? I think only an idiot would use such an argument as you just did rather than discussing the real issues.
