Whenever I log on to Facebook he seems to log off before I get to chat to him.

No, personally i do not think he is avoiding you. its happened with me before whenever i try to talk to someone they mysteriously go offline and im like WTF!.. i really needed to talk to you aswell. Sometimes when people just close the brower theyre whole facebook logs out and sometimes they dont. dont be scared to approach him and talk to him, just be yourself

If he was trying to avoid you, he would block you on facebook. You need to develop a comfort with him face to face. Try just smiling when you see him in the halls. Next, just a casual wave or a nod across the hall. You'll soon discover if your attention is welcome.
