how to know if a business name is available?

Starting a sole-proprietorship from home-based office and am running into road blocks as to how to search for company name availability. Any suggestions?

TradeName - local through your state's Secretary of State office in your state's capital.
TradeMark - national through the USPTO (US Patent and Trade Office).
DBA - "Doing Business As" (local - same process as getting a TradeName)
