Senior Citizen Friends, how in the world, do I stop these @#$%^$#^&*@# pop ups from showing up?

and interrupting my computer time.
Every time I "search" for something, like airline tickets, a pop up comes on, trying to sell something else, completly different.
I have put my pop up blocker on HIGH, but I still get them through Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Does anyone know how to stopp this annoying, "pain-n-the-u-know-what" ? I'm ready to take this machine out, and put it (or me) out of it's misery.

Thank you Guys, for all the neat answers.
I "scan" (and "dump") regularily, and have Trend Micro but it doesn't seem to be working.
I will look into MozillaFox, AFTER I "claim" the car that one of those ### darn, popups, told me that I won, dag-nabbit !
Thanks folks, and I promise that will NOT let this ruin my day.

It is likely that you have some malware (badware, spyware) infesting your computer. You need to get rid of it. Turning on your pop up blockers does nothing to help when you have spyware/malware on your computer.

Many antivirus programs do not include anti-malware functions, so you may need to find some to download. I use BitDefender scans, which I've linked below, but there are others.

Run the scan; to eliminate that nasty software. Then; clear out your Temporary Internet Files (cache), clear out your Cookies. Reboot your computer. Then; get back online and check for security updates from Microsoft. Then make sure your firewall software and antivirus software is also up to date. Consider installing a separate malware/spyware prevention software.

I have had this problem in the past. The security software I use now includes anti-malware protection and I haven't had a problem with pop ups and spyware since I installed it.

I have Trend Micro and seems to not allow anymore pop ups or infiltration of any virus. McAfee always seem to miss the pop ups and have let some Trojan come in. The Norton take overs and will not let you do anything. My advice is always keep your system scanned often. The Pop ups sometimes end up in your start up other then being a cookie that is deleted by anti virus software. So that might take the Geek Squad to help you out. Sometimes you can quarantine it if you cannot remove it, but will not cause anymore harm, but a pain in the A**.

I'm another Mozilla Firefox fan.
And I added their free "AdBlock Plus."
That gets updated & notifies you when new updates are available.
I don't get ads when watching TV on live.
My bank was telling me I had a tutorial to learn my pay on line. She said click on the lady pointing to an icon. My screen was all text. AdBlock Plus was blocking unnecessary movement. I had a clear still icon with text.
I don't even know if Yahoo Answers still had ads along the borders. I haven't seen any in the year since I began with Mozilla products.
You've already been given the link. Look around for all the customizable down loads & add ons to stop what you don't want to clutter your screen.
I still have IE8, just no need to use it.

Sounds like you pc is infected. Install a copy of Malwarebytes or Superantispyware, both freeware, and clean out your browser cache, and update and run in safemode to get rid of the problem
