Need help with the differences?

I am currently working a novel and I'm using different forms of communication, i.e. texting, IMing, note passing, ect. For things like IMing, should i use a different font? Could you guys give me some ideas on how to represent the differences?

I've seen authors use different fonts for letters in a novel. I would think that IMing would be similar to a letter. Indicating that some other form of communication is being used besides the spoken word. Some authors even use different fonts for each chapter if they writing in the style of different points of view, going back and forth between characters in a story. (ex- Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks & House Rules by Jodi Picoult.)
