How do I use ranged weapons on Darklands?

Ok, maybe I'm just an idiot, but my ranged characters (An archer named Roxanne, a thief named Yohannes, and an alchemist named Wilhelm) simply will not use their ranged attacks! They just stand there like retards until the enemies get within melee range, then try (in vain, since my knight is the only one who's worth a damn in melee) to melee fight them. The alchemist gets killed in one damn hit, and the thief dies in two or three. 

I can't win a single fight against ****ing BANDITS, the first and (from what I've read) easiest enemies in the game, without the alchemist (Who, by the way, has the highest charisma, intelligence and artifice, and is the only one who can speak latin, read or use alchemy) dying! By the way, if it helps, I'm using Dosbox. Can someone help?

Well the easiest answer is to use the M key while that character is selected in battle (M is for "missile" I guess). That's for thrown weapons, and I believe it applies to bows and missile devices (xbow and gunpowder) as well.

This assumes you've equipped the ranged weapon in question (press "A" while the item is highlighted in the inventory screen, and the graphic for the armor or weapon will show up in the character's portrait).

But if I may offer a further tip, characters should not be devoted solely to ranged or melee. Every character should use a ranged weapon while enemies are approaching and every character should use a melee weapon once they engage. It's not unusual to lose a character early in the bandit farming, but it shouldn't be happening every time.

All four characters should have at least 35 Strength and Endurance. Then each one gets to specialize in one (maybe two) other attributes. One should have charisma (leadership qualities), one should have perception (for detecting traps, and I think it's good for religious studies), one for intelligence (for alchemy), and one for agility (for artifice).
