Harry Truman's goal was containment of communism like the Bush Doctrine today which is the containment of terrorism.

In the Cold War the Soviet Union was spreading communism really fast across the world. The U.S. wanted to stop it, so we had war in Korea and Vietnam to stop communism. The doctrine also states that they are to assist non-communist countries regardless if they are democratic or totalitarian to oppose communism like Saddam's Iraq and the Apartheid government in South Africa.

The Truman Doctrine is similar to the Bush Doctrine in that it is basically a war on ideology. Both of the doctrines intervene to stop the spread of communism and terrorism.

The Truman Doctrine had the goal of containing Communism to countries where it was already the established form of government, and preventing its spread to other countries.

The Truman Doctrine is therefore also sometimes known as Containment.
