Greek life terminology (fraternities/sororities)?

What is the meaning of the term "sand/sands"?
I have seen it used between orgs of the MGC and NPHC at my university.
Are non-greek persons not allowed to know its meaning?
I assume non-greeks are not allowed to use it of course, I was just curious of what it meant.
