Which is better: Forester or Outback?

My wife and I are talking about replacing our 1997 Outback. Its tranny is giving us slight problems and we don't want to wait for it to die on us (It has 253K miles on it).

We want to get another Subaru but we're not sure which one. We'll need room for transporting things, like scuba gear and camping.

What are the pros and cons for each?

For more room the Outback, a larger vehicle by about 3" (interior). The drive trains and all other components are essentially the same.
And I am not "dissing" the Forester at all. It is our choice for travel.

Foresters are built on Impreza platforms so they are not very big inside. It's a little deceiving because they are taller but they are identical inside. If space is a factor, I would definitely look for a Legacy. But you should really go out and look at both. Who knows, the Forester may be enough room for you and they are a little cheaper.

They are both expensive and unrealiable. Get a Toyota stationwagon or a Nissan
