Are 2000-2003 Subaru Forester/Outback reliable good cars?

I see both of these cars have a bad reliability ratings on consumerreports, specifiically under the "major engine" category. I am looking to get one of these this summer for around 5-6K..Or would I be better off getting a Mazda Protoge 5?

They are actually very reliable if maintained properly. And they hold their value well which is proof of reliability. Mazda has about the worst resale value of the Japanese brands and i would avoid them. The boxer engine actually has its advantages. The design allows for less stress on the parts when the engine is running and when the engine is shut down for a long period, oil actually stays under the cylinder so there's less stress when restarting the motor. In line cylinders start dry and that causes wear.

    Subaru Outback Reliability Rating

  • The "major" problems are head gaskets. That is really the only common problem with this engine. Otherwise, very reliable car. if you buy one, find one that hasn't been abused.

P.S. Subaru fixed the head gasket issue in 2005. Which the reliability survey will show.

I don't like those boxer engines. I could be wrong but I suspect they wear out faster than in line blocks.
