What about military Chaplins?

Is it violation of the separation of church and state to have Chaplins in the military or would it be a violation of freedom of religion to send soldiers places where there are no places of worship without sending a Chaplin with them? Especially soldiers who believe they need last rites if they are mortally wounded.

cat_love - I believe the Chaplin (a minister) is a govt employee. That seems unique to me.

The chaplaincy is a centuries-old military tradition. They serve as counselors, morale officers, and religious officiates to military personnel. I don't see how the chaplaincy is in any way a First Amendment violation, especially since most installations have multiple chaplains for more than one religion.

I know Ronald Reagan made training movies and Abbott and Costello sold war bonds but I'm not aware of Charlie Chaplin making any war movies.

At least one person got it.

There are chaplains for many faith groups. Chaplains are obligated to counsel those who are not members of their faith. A chaplain is an officer.

Congress has a (civilian) chaplain.

Military bases have chapels.
