I am about to buy another AK and I was debating about buying an ak-74 (5.45x39). I already have an ak and an sks chambered for the 7.62x39 and ive heard that the 5.45 is much more fun to shoot. The problem is that there doesnt seem to be as much 5.45 ammo out there. You can buy it online really cheap but not many stores or gunshows for that matter seem to have it. I know that the 7.62 will pretty much be around forever but what about the 5.45? is it simply a passing fad or will the supply grow enough to rival the 7.62?

As pointed out above, the AK74 is the new military rifle of choice. So the 5.45 will be around for a long time to come. Anyhow, if I ever buy another AK it will be a AK74. I have shot some in the past and their a lot more fun due to reduced felt recoil. It's about like shooting an AR.
Go with the 5.45. The ammo is very cheap online, don't waste your money at gunshows and local stores.

Just be sure to clean your rifle correctly since much of the military surplus 5.45 is corrosive. Just clean (the whole gun, anywhere the gas can get) with a water or water based cleaner before cleaning as normal.
