Can one apply for a social security if on a tourist visa?
My friend is from the U.K. (British). Her employer is willing to have her on a contract basis and then LATER provide her with a working visa if things work fine. However, they want her to get a social security card to check her criminal background and other things related to that.
In my understanding, she CAN'T obtain one as she is a tourist and is not authorized to work in the USA. Or is there a way around it? Can she apply for one without having her employer provide her with a working visa as it is a long process and they aren't sure yet if they want her for that long...
What are your thoughts on this?

A foreigner on a tourist visa cannot legally obtain a SSN and cannot legally work. If an employer wishes to hire her on a contract basis with a SSN, then either they are not aware of her visa status or they are expecting her to get a fake SSN.
yes, u are correct. she can not work legally in the US...unless her employer obtained her a working visa. she is from the UK so her background criminal check should come from there. her employer SHOULD be the one providing these visas and it will be easier, although few months. If she does it, will take ages and u don't really want to get in trouble for doing something u didn't know u were not suppose to do. and FYI, illegal immigrants CAN NOT obtained Social Security Card. having a tourist visa does not mean they are legal. It's a TOUR visa, meaning just visiting on a holiday/ vacation.
