Can someone tell me what my dog might of had?

I bought my dog at a pet store not realizing that a lot of them support puppy mills. My dog a teacup chihuahua(2 pounds) always looked emaciated, you could feel his ribs and spine even though he ate a lot. He was tested for the heart worms and all other normal tests everything came back good. We never knew what was wrong why he didn't gian any weight we even had him neutered hoping that would help but it didn't. Two weeks ago e started having blood in his stool and couldn't keep water down. He was still able to walk around and jump up on the couch but as he was so little I worried about dehydration. I took him to our vet even though I had no money they saw him. They told me the gave him an injection to stop the diarrhea and vomiting plus fluids. They were concerned about his temperature as it was low. They had me take him home with some medicine and nutrical and instructions to keep him warm. When I got him back he couldn't hold his head up he was like a limp doll later that evening he had seizures and 1 was real bad he was barely breathing. We rushed him to an ER vet who told me that he had a low heartbeat aw well as breathing, they could preform CPR on him but only gave him a 10% chance to live. I made the decision to have him put down. He was only 3 years old and my companion, I miss him a lot but have questions on what could have made him so sick so fast. We have a fenced in backyard and I always went out with him so I know he wasn't poisoned. If anyone has any idea can you let me know. Please do not respond if you just want to harp on me because he was a puppy mill puppy. All animals need love just like people and it shouldn't be held against them.

My guess would be parvo seeing the bloody stool. Parvo prevents the dog from gaining any nutrient from the food it's eating so it winds up really sick and may die.

Seeing you got him from the pet store he might not have had the vaccination for Parvo as a puppy.

My 6 year old Bichon got Parvo after being vaccinated as a puppy but she got over it, but then she got it again last year was sick for 2 weeks almost died. But with the proper care and treatment she recovered.

Also if your gonna get another dog make sure to clean everything your dog might have done his business at seeing the virus can live on for months after leaving the dog and thus infecting it again (A dog that has already had it and recovered) or other dogs that enter your house. So make sure to chlorine rinse everything, bed sheds and everything he might have slept on.

And make sure to go to your backyard and pick up every piece off stool left there, would hurt getting a antibacterial spray to spray on the spots you picked up the stools.

Sorry for your loss. No, it shouldn't be held against the puppies/dogs that they are puppy mill dogs---but it should most definitely be held against the people that breed them.

Parvo would have been my first guess- did they do a parvo snap test at the ER? Was the dog vaccinated? Since you said you had your dog neutered, most if not all vets would require the dog be up to date on vaccines before surgery.

Otherwise people who breed "teacups" or any puppy- and send them to pet shops do not care about the health and well-being of the puppies they produce. Anything "teacup" sells. To create a super-tiny dog, the smallest runts are bred with other small runts, and it doesn't matter if they are sickly or have defects. The only thing that matters is that the dog is tiny.

Your dog could have had any number of congenital defects--such as a liver shunt, which often afflicts toy breeds-- that prevented him from growing properly, gaining weight and thriving. If left on his own, he may have died at birth or shortly thereafter-- or euthanized by a good breeder when they saw the puppy was too sickly. But puppymillers will keep these puppies alive, nurse them along so they can ship them out to the public.

Without a necropsy, it's impossible to know for sure what the problem was.

I think it may have been parvo. I don't know what else.
I am really sorry to hear that.
Even though the dog was from a puppy mill I am happy that you loved it and gave it a good home, after all- its not the dogs fault, you cant hate the dog. Hate the breeder. Thank you.

Definitely sounds like Parvo.

One of my dogs had a bloody stool, vomiting, lethargy and a high temperature and loss of appetite, but it turned out to just be Dehydration. We were worried it was parvo, but she got that vaccine so we took her to the vet and they hooked her up to an IV and kept her for a night. She was perfectly fine the next morning.

Sorry for your loss.

well here's why if you want him to stay hot make him sweat by doing exercises and feed him some table scrapes like chicken steak and um some taco meat spicy of course and by the way they hate to left alone if you leave them alone they flip out and think everything is a predator and Attack it occurs at age 3 sometimes you should bring him with you in purse or cage depends how friendly it is
