Maybe not doomsday, but it would definitely create lots of death and chaos. Humans fear what they do not understand and like to romanticize about war, heroics, and and conflict. At the first sign of aliens it would be war haws vs. religious nuts vs. peace-loving hippies, all fighting along side the average man who would be in an utter panic. If there are aliens out there and they have studied our behavior, they would probably realize quickly that humans are far from ready for first contact and probably not worthy of interest.
