I read that article today as well. Most of the large airlines are pretty much the same in terms of service. My most recent trip was with Delta and the flight was delayed over 2 hours. Other Delta flights that day were also delayed by at least 2 or 3 hours when I looked. By the time I arrived in Laos Angel es, I only had 35 minutes to connect to my Malaysia Airlines flight. It was important that I made this flight because Malaysia Airlines only has 3 flights a week to KULA Lumpier. Also since we arrived so late, there would be almost no choices left for me as all the other Asian airlines would have left already. Though I made the flight, my luggage did not. Then my luggage was damaged and Delta said that it was not their fault they broke the wheel off my bag. They also said that a wheel breaking off the luggage does not constitute damaged luggage.
Another Delta flight I was on was from San Francisco to Atlanta. One passenger asked a flight attendant where the light switch was and the flight attendant unwillingly did so and when the passenger thanked her, she walked off without saying a word. Then one of the flight attendants made an announcement as we were taxiing to the runway that everyone had to turn off all portable electronic devices or we will just continue to taxi around the airport. I felt as though we were in elementary school.
Delta has the most flights out of where I live so we really don't have much choice. Plus I am a frequent flier of the airline so there is no point in boycotting the airline. However I have noticed that ever since they became the world's largest airline (for now), the service has gone down.
Good luck finding a US airline that stands out with its customer service. Actually, most businesses today do not understand what customer service is. When I fly, I am looking for a few basic things - get me where I want to go, get me there safe, and get me there close to when you say you will. I understand working with the public is taxing on anyones patients. Politely put, some people can be very anoying and if you work with people, you always seem to find these annoying people. That being said, I put little emphasis on customer service. Just do the other things I mentioned and we will be ok. Since flying is safe, that hasn't been an issue either. As for being on time, it happens sometimes usually by no fault of the airline (ie. weather, mechanical). Just deal with it. Now as far as my most "un-favorite", I can't answer because I choose my airlines different. My favorite airline is the airline that gets me to where I want to go the cheapest. I start looking for flights months in advance (6+ months) and usually find an airline with a sale. That is my favorite airline at the moment.
A note on customer service, if you smile and talk nice with people you often get the same in return.
