Is it fine to ask someone out on a date through text message?
If it is fine, what should I say in the text?
I tried to phone her once, but she did not answer. I am scared to phone her again, she might think that I am too desparate.

You can send her a text - but I would not recommend it. If she does not answer you will be wondering whether she received it (even if you get a delivery report it may not have been delivered - and stuff always goes wrong when it is an important message).
Try calling her again. If you are paranoid that she may think you are desperate just turn off your caller ID. That way she will not know that ir was you calling if she doesn't answer :-) And then she will only think you tried calling her once...

Just ask her to her face. If you ask her through text and she says no, you're not going to be sure why.
It's fine to ask someone but the results might make you unhappy.
Good luck.
?
heck why not just ask her out via Facebook for that matter....
electronics have no feelings, call her or see her and ask her.
just because you called once and she didn't answer doesn't make you desperate. calling her every hour does.
why don't you text her and see if she can talk in person or on the phone. then you can ask her out.
especially important if this is your first/second date

First off you should tell her face to face, if distance or transportation is a problem then by talking on the phone, and as a last resort ( i mean very last). Text, email, msn, facebook her ( whatever one works for you). It would be better though if you did it face to face
?
Leave her a message saying..
