Deep hum from stereo receiver?

When I plug RCA jacks in, I have a low pitched hum. Usually can't hear it until quiet moment in music. This happens on all channels, such as CD, Tape, Vid VCR. It imediately quits when i pull plug out. Is it poor qualitiy cableas, bad ground etc How do I fix it?? Thanks much from an annoyed audiophyle!

It happens with all components but is of course present only when component is used. . For example when I am playing a CD in the computer, it will deminish to zero if I unplug jacks. When I am using TV/cable, it goes away when I unplug cthose particular RCAs.

You have a very interesting problem. I would enjoy attempting to solve it on location. Hum is either caused by poor grounding (as you already know) or dirty power supplies (causing 60 or 120hz hum).
I would disassemble the stereo receiver and attempt to locate problem with my oscilloscope. I would expect to find a poor solder connection(s) or possibly filter capacitors that have changed value (lowered capacitance).

Does it happen when any RCA plug is plugged in or is it just on one component?
