Why do we rake leaves?

Is it just a my-yard-is-better-than-your-yard thing... or is there an actual, legitimate reason to rake the leaves?

There is an acutal reason why.

When it snows the leaves will be burried and then once it melts your yard will be really muddy and look weird! Also it will make your yard unhealthy and you wil have dead grass.
Always rake your leaves!

Aside from the appearance factor, you could ruin your lawn if you allowed a blanket of leaves to cover your yard. They would keep your grass from getting moisture during the colder season and there would be no air circulation to keep the grass from rotting under the blanket. It would be OK to shred some leaves then sprinkle the bits over your lawn for the nutrients but a solid blanket could be harmful.

Curb Appeal :) Makes your yard look nice. You don't want the snow to melt then have to rake up leaves now do you? :)

I guess it's just a person's way of keeping their yard tidy. Kinda silly to me, leaves are a part of nature, but TOO many leaves may need some tidying up.
