Pruning and trimming the rose bushes at the right time will ensure that the roses bloom into beautiful, full flowers. This should be done at the end of the winter season. Pruning should be done as little as possible and not till the ground. Dead blooms should also be cut. Crossing canes, spindly stalks and deadwood should also be cleared.

I worked for a garden-landscaper and we did the rose pruning along with the Spring garden clean-up in April. I'm from New England, not sure where you are. The branches that are brown and not producing buds are the ones to go. Try not to cut them down too far towards where they are still green. It can be a tedious process, but a rewarding one as the bushes take off better with pruning. Good luck.
