I have an e system sorrento 1 laptop which comes with a built in microphone. When i got it the microphone worked fine. I hadnt used it in a while but i recently did and its not working. The sound comes out really deep and low (not as in volume, as in pitch) Is it permanently broken?

go to control panel then choose "hardware and sound" and choose "manage audio device" under sound title and adjust it...for win 7.

Try to check for updates for your microphone.
click start> search for device manager> click sound and video game controllers> right click items that is underneath this menu> choose update driver

Reboot your laptop twice and that should fix the issue.
