Wouldn't it be beneficial for the USA and Canada merge into one nation?
In the past those nations formed, if I am not mistaken, because of the American revolution and the desire of the States to get full independence from the British Crown. But back in those times the British Crown really meant something - it was no just a symbol. Now those problems of independence from Britain are not an issue any more. So wouldn't be beneficial (at least in theory) for two the two nations unite to produce some kind of federation like the United Provinces and States of America, or just Federation of the United North America, or something of this sort? :)

Thomas Jefferson proposed this when discussing his Idea of "the empire of liberty", where he explains America should march into Canada (at the time under British control) and Liberate them through armed force, because he believed America's freedom would only be safe if other nations was as free as us. (free as we were during the early 1800's would be more accurate)
So I would not be opposed to forming a Confederation with Canada based on the original Ideals of our founders.
Yes parts of Canada was liberated along with us during the revolution, but the treaty we had with the British gave them back Canada, as part of the compromised agreement.
If we concentrate on the "beneficial" part - I think it would be. Whenever two rich countries merge, there is always a benefit. However, what is happening lately is only dissolutions within federations. But the idea of these modern unions (e.g. European Union) is becoming quite attractive. When states decide to unite in something, be it a federation, union, or confederation - this means they decide to give part of their sovereignty for the sake of the union, i.e. you have to respect and decide in correlation with the other member(s). Whenever you join a union, that means you cannot decide unilaterally anymore. European Union has this problem. They do not have a common stance on anything. It is functioning only as an economic union, but a political one - no! Is U.S. ready to decide about its foreign policy together with Canada?!? Well, I do not think so!
The Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II, owns the land Canada is on. If the US Canada wanted to merge, they'd have to buy the land for several trillion dollars.
Perhaps you havent already heard of the North American Union. something thats more than just a concept but a goal of some at least. however it would include Mexico.
