I got a new puppy and the cat didn't like him, at all. He then slipped out the door and hasn't been seen for three days. When he does get out he comes back every night. So my question is: If he gets hungry/cold/thirsty enough will he come home despite his hatred of the new puppy?

Cats are pouters. When you hurt their feelings, they punish. it doesn't really hate the puppy, just that you got someone else to love. You didn't say if it was a male or female or how old, but males can tend to be gone for a week or more at a time, just tom catting around and if it's mad then it could stay away for a few days or so. Females can do the same, but they tend to look for someone to give them attention. More than likely it will be back. There is always the dreaded "someone else took it in" or " it's been hit' scenario but just give it a few more days. You'll probably see your cat again. It will either come around about the puppy (if you keep it in the house), or it will learn to avoid it and things will be fine. Good luck.

The same thing happened to me when I got a new puppy. My cat left for a while and whenever she was in the presence of the dog she would swat at him but now they even kind of get along!

It may be that you cat has such a hatred to dogs that he may never return, especially as you said he returns every night and hasnt for 3 days. Cats dont need us to survive they only come back because its an easy meal, and if hes not happy he wont return and even if you get rid of the pup he still may never come back. I just have to say that if you knew your cat doesnt like dogs and has never been bougt up with 1 then Im sorry but you buying a pup was irresponsible and you didnt consider the cat at ll. My son wants a pup but I forbid it as my cat detests them and as she was 1st she has to be considered 1st, sorry but thats my opinion
