Identical twins do not run in families and fraternal twins are genetic, but depend on if you inherited the gene for hyperovulation, they do not "skip generations" what happens is your dad may have gotten the gene (it would have no effect on him as he doesn't ovulate) but he could pass it to you making it "appear" to "skip a generation". But anyway, all that being said, if you do have identicals, its a complete genetic fluke, and if you have fraternals, one of your parents passed on the hyperovulation gene to you......most people have a 1-3% chance of twins and you won't know until an ultrasound pics up two sacs, two babies, or two heartbeats, its really not something anyone can predict!!! Congrats on the pregnancy and best wishes :)
ETA: Additionally, the previous poster is also correct, your baby's father having twins in his family or being a twin has nothing to do with whether you will have twins or not This link explains how it all works pretty well:
Identical twins are a "fluke" and are not genetic.
Is your father a fraternal or identical twin? If he is a fraternal twin, that type is genetic and could increase your chances of conceiving twins but it does not mean you will.
Your husband's family history of twins has no effect on your conceiving twins, whether identical or fraternal.
Other factors increase your chances of twins- multiple pregnancies, pregnancies close together, getting pregnant soon after having a baby, being overweight, being older, etc. Even all of those WITH a genetic history of twins would not guarantee it, just increase your odds.
twins come from the moms side. However, Identical twins is kinda a freak of nature. Please don't take that the wrong way, I'm not saying Identical twins are freaks! Fraternal twins is what has the chance of repeating it's self. Good luck though and congratulations.
It just depends on you. I have a lot of twins in my family too. So far I haven't had any. Darn! I want them. I was hoping this pregnancy was twins. It may show in your blood work. If the numbers are high, it could mean twins.
wow!thats alot of twins. my grandmother was a ferternal twin so that means i have a chance of having twins myself. so you do have a chance of having twins. you can tell if ur pregnancy symptoms are WAY more exaggerated
