I have a Ruger Model 77 in 30-06. Can I fire 7.62x63 from it?

Please help!

So, Super Gregg. Since 7.62x63 is metric, can I fire it out of my M48 in 7.92x57? They look the same to me...

Yes, but good for you for asking.
7.62x63 is just the metric designation for the .30-06 cartridge.

This info I got off the net, from a discussion group

7.62 X 63 =.30-06 Goverment
7.62 X 51 Nato = .308 Rem
7.62 X 25 Tokarev = .30 Mauser = 7.63 Mauser

You're smart to ask. Most dual-use ammo, like .223 Rem or 308 Win, has slight but important differences from their military versions (5.56x45 and 7.62x51).

However, 30-06 Spr was always a military cartridge, and is the same thing as 7.62x53.

Thumbs up to deerhunter because it is never a good assumption that because a round chambers in your rifle, it's safe to pull the trigger.

7.62x 63 is the metric designation for .30-06 Springfield. It is too long for the 7.92x57. Europeans have no problems with metrics as they have been using it since they were born. Try this: load your Winchester 94 with 7.62x 51. It won't work. You need 7.62x51R.

Gee, firing 30-06 cartridges from a rifle chambered for 30-06? That's a tough one, and a difficult concept!
Please don't bait the children.
