In an emergency situation like the one in Egypt, where US citizens need to be evacuated, how much does it cost?

The State Department says, "The U.S. Department of State is arranging transportation to safe haven locations in Europe. This assistance will be provided on a reimbursable basis, as required by U.S. law. U.S. citizens who travel on U.S. government–arranged transport will be expected to make their own onward travel plans. We expect initial flights to go into Athens, Istanbul and Nicosia, Cyprus. " I read this to mean that they will help you leave Egypt, but for a price, and then from wherever they send you, you have to pay an additional amount to get home. I don't think this was always the case, but evidently it is now. So how much are people having to pay to get to Athens, Cyprus, or wherever?

The "usual" bill for emergency evacuation on a military aircraft is full fare coach on a commercial airline. I don't know if anyone actually pays that price.

They probably charge standard air fare to get to out ot the country which will not be much 2 to 3 hundred dollars, but if you have an advance purchase cheap round trip to Cairo ticket it may cost you a lot to get home unless the airline will make some arrangement to transfer your flight to where you end up. Since they have canceled flights to and from Egypt it is likely that they will and if you are not due to leave for a week or more, you could just go back to egypt and catch the one you have tickets for if things have calmed down by then.

It means the US will get you out of harms way, but you will have to pay the bill later.
