Your body shivers to create heat in order to kill off whatever bacteria is in your body. This is why when you are sick you will often have a fever. Your body will try to kill off the bacteria with heat!

Unfortunately the scientific answer to this is really complex & too complicated to go into here. It has to do with the substances the body produces (called cytokines) in response to an invasion. There are probably at least a few hundred of them. They do all kinds of different things, but some raise the temperature and other do physiological things that result in shivering. These substances (discovery-wise) are relatively new (in the last 15 years or so) and there is still much to be discovered.
