Changing career at the age of 40?

I'm almost 40 years old and I'm ready for a career change. I can't really advance any further with my current career, and I really don't want to continue in this field anyway. I am considering going back to college to be a vet tech. I know they don't make much money, but I don't have a family to support or large mortgage payment, so it would work out fine. I'm just wondering what the chances are of finding a position in that field at the age of 40. All the vet techs that I've seen are under 30.

I'm considering this change because I've worked for years in a field that I really don't enjoy, and it's very stressful. I know there is stress in every job/career but if I enjoyed my work I know I would be a lot happier. Thoughts? Suggestions?

I think you should do it. 40 is not that old. You can take classes at night while you work at your current job. You shouldn't spend the rest of your life in a career you don't like. You are at least 25 years away from retirement. You don't want to spend the next 25 years in regret. Go for it. Good luck.

Sounds good to me! I know a couple of people who have made a similar move and were very happy with their decision. The fact that money isn't really a factor for you is great too. Check out the article below, it has some good advice for people changing careers to become a vet tech.

I have no knowledge of the field but I think you should go for it. As long as the low pay is acceptable, follow your dream. My cousin is in banking but has always loved animals. I thought she do what you're doing. Your age shouldn't prevent you from getting a job, you're not that old. And you have maturity and life wisdom a 20 year old does not.

If you don't do this, you will only get older and older and regret it more and more.

Go for it, and good luck!

It's whatever you want to do, but right now there is a recession, and it's very hard to find jobs.
