Do you listen to music in the grocery store?

I was in the grocery store tonight, and I was kind of bored. I popped in my earbuds and started listening to my iPod. I kept getting weird looks from people and then I asked my mom "Does this look ridiculous or something?" and I pointed to my earbuds. She said "Yeah, it kinda does look ridiculous. Take them out right now."

I started observing other people around the store, and not a single person was wearing earbuds! Then I started thinking, why DON'T people listen to music while they're shopping? If it's a fairly horrid atmosphere like Wal-Mart I would imagine that music would make the shopping trip a LOT more enjoyable. Joggers wear them, and shopping is kind of like jogging...

Is there anybody out there who listens to music in the grocery store? If not, why don't you?

I don't see why it's such a big deal to. If you're shopping alone, chances are, people aren't going to be talking to you, so it's not like it's rude. And what's the point of earphones if you can't listen to your music, when you want to, without disturbing others? If you're worried somebody IS going to try and talk to you, or you're with somebody else, even leaving one earbud in on low volume is okay, in my book. Now leaving them in at the cashier I do find a bit rude, simply because they might say something you need to hear. Or, if you're anything like my family, you make friends with everyone and wind up making small talk with the cashiers.
Yeah, I listen to music in stores all the time. Even better, I dance along. I don't give a crap if people stare at me, so what? I'm enjoying myself. To the person who compared it to being on phones: No, it's not. Phones are annoying because half the time the person on the phone doesn't realize where they are and start yelling or talking about personal problems.
And I don't see how it looks ridiculous. It looks like you're listening to music. WOAH, that's crazy! Nobody ever walks around with headphones on!
Now, singing along with it is another thing, whether you're talented or not. I admit I'm guilty of this, because sometimes I just get into it, but hey, if I'm disturbing people, I won't be insulted if they ask me to stop.

Long story short: Yes, I do, all the time. It's why I have headphones: To listen to my music when I want to, instead of going back in time and lugging a stereo around on my shoulder.

No, I'm usually on a mission to get my goods and exit as fast as I can, and sometimes the mission is aborted due to the in-store radio and human cacophony, although music can help recover from the experience.

nodumgys, they probably only look at you funny when you rearrange the sausage display for a photo shoot or ask where to find spotted dick.

at one point it was the only way I could be in a store, but im a little more centered now and I can cope without the protective barrier of the music. even if I wanted it I always forget to have any ear buds now. I guess people look at you funny, but people look at me funny anyway.

lucy, they were noticing my ear buds and how uncool I look in them, what better distraction than sausage.

I used to blast Ride the Lightning everywhere I went. I stopped doing it now because I listen to my music full blast and it's only Metal and Punk so it's pretty loud.

Yes, I do. My hair hides my ear buds, though and I put them under my shirt because they get in the way; sometimes I take them off by accident.
