I normally use FF (currently using 3.6.15), and it's really frustrating to have a website tell me it's optimized for browsers x, y, and z, and that I need to upgrade or get one of those -- and I'm using a newer version of FF than they have listed! One I just visited (using FF) says "we see you're using IE 6."
Is there something I can do to get around this issue?

Try looking for a user agent changer for Firefox (search addons).

There are add-ons I believe to change the User-Agent to spoof another browser.
But don't bother. Usually they just check you are not using wget to download entire websites. If they really need some feature in IE, like ActiveX, telling FF to pretend to be IE is not going to help.
(I still think it's funny that IE says it's Mozilla compatible)

Nope. It's not you. It's their lack of ability in designing a website in all browsers.
Personally, these sites drive me nuts and I won't even bother with them.
