[HELP] You are looking through the most advanced telescope...?

You are looking through the most advanced telescope.. You see that there is Martians in Mars! Not only that but they are sitting on a classroom doing math! This is what their board says:

3*3=9 // 4*4=15 // 10*10=100

How many fingers (or tentacles) do they have?

There is nothing exceptional about the results 3*3 = 9 and 10*10 = 100 (but this one is always the same, whatever the 'base' of your counting system may be. It tells you nothing about what value of that base ).

The only unusual result is 4*4 = 15, which suggests that their "tens" column is actually an "elevens" column, so that the figure "15" stands for (1 x 11) + 5 = 16 in decimal notation. So one presumes that they must have 11 fingers.

(And then that "10*10 = 100" will really mean 11 x 11 = 121 in decimal notation).
