hp deskjet 3920 printer problem?

I have a hp deskjet 3920. Today when I wanted a printout what my printer gave was a readable printout but with all the vertical lines being discontinuous. My black (21) cartridge was almost empty and I tried inserting a new one. But the problem persists. Can you help me to figure out what is wrong with my printer please?

I am using only the black cartridge (in ink backup mode).
Driver is up to date. Win XP

I tried cleaning. But it doesn't work.
When I take a large number of printouts I've found it goes fine after about 10 printouts.
But next day, it appears again

Remove the cartridge and use a cotton swab and alcohol. Rub it on the underneath of the cartridge as well as the print head itself. Replace the cartrdige and it should rpint find.

Run the maintenance tasks. Click the start button, printers and right click your printer, properties and click the maintenance tab and run the cleaning and print head alignment tasks.

Try running a cleaning program for the printer.
