I'm not totally sure on this, but I would contact the registery and explain your vet's findings. Don't tell them that this is in retaliation because they won't take you seriously. They will probably need a few vet opinions and a DNA sample from each mare. Hopefully something turns up. Hang on to any paperwork you have from her.

I'm so sorry about your horse. We were in the same situation a few years ago. We bred and sold a beautiful tb colt to a great racing stable. He was doing great. He got second on his first race and broke his maiden the second race. Unfortunately, he cracked a sesmoid when he misstepped in the winner's circle (ironic right?). He had surgery and was rehabed and came back to race a year later, but he wasn't the same horse. Although he was sound, he wasn't winning. He went between a few more racing stables before he dropped off the map. The best we can find out is that he went to live with a family in North Dakota. We have no way of verifying this, which concerns me. And North Dakota is pretty close to Canada. We fear that he was sent to slaughter, but in my mind, he lives in North Dakota with a loving family....Show more

I go with Judy in that he is unlikely to have gone for slaughter because she would have lost money on him and I personally think that when she took him on she already had a customer lined up for him.

As for the rest your vet cannot say for certain what breed the horses are, each breed has many variables, look at the difference in TBs some are small and stocky, others long and lean, yet they are all TBs.

I am sorry but vets are not mini gods, yes, they go to school to learn about animals and the treatments of them but, they do not spend much time on learning about ageing a horse or, animal behaviour leave out them being taught about breeds or feeing of each animal. Ask a vet the golden rules of feeding a horse and they are very unlikely to be able to tell you.
I have known more than one vet state that a horse is 4 years when it is only two.

If you look at your horses front teeth then telling whether it is three or four is easy. There are six teeth top and bottom. At two and a half years the front middle teeth (centrals) will change from milk teeth to permanents , at three and a half the laterals will change and at four and a half the corner teeth will change. There is a significant difference between milk and permanent teeth so you should be easily able to see. Each tooth takes about six months to come into wear so if your horse is has only the front permanent teeth in wear and the others are still milk teeth then it is only three. If the laterals have come out then it will be four this year.

As for knowing where your other horse has been sold to there was no written contract so there is nothing you can do other than advertise to ask who has bought him. You cannot get any registry to do anything about this woman because she has done nothing wrong legally. You could get in touch with the registry to see is the new owners have changed his papers to their name, they might tell you if they have....Show more

I am so sorry this has happened to you. While most people who buy/train/sell horses are very ethical and can be trusted, there are a few like this person who ruin it for everyone else.

Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do at this point. I don't see any legal avenue and I'm not sure what horse association would take this on.

The best I can say is that everyone here who loves horses and hopes to have one some day should read this letter and then cut it out and put it with all your other horse stuff so that you will always double check everything a seller tells you, including having a pre-purchase vet check AND GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING!

This is sad that this had to happen to you. You are not the only one who has been the victim of fraud. It happens to good, smart people every day. You are not alone. I would certainly pursue the legal end of it if you can. Report her and do what you must do to make sure she does not do this to someone else!

As for the horse you lost, it is understandable that you feel bad about this but also look at things from another angle. Why would she trade TWO perfectly healthy horses for one she plans to slaughter? It doesn't make sense. Selling for a higher price to someone who doesn't know better would probably be more profitable. If she needed the money that bad there are many unhealthy animals that people just give away. She could have just as easily doctored up more paperwork and sold him to someone and is covering up her lie.

Whatever happened to him is not your concern now. Good, sweet, healthy horses get slaughtered every day...BUT more often than not, if the horse is truly of value it is saved. Truth be told a lot of fraud exists in the world of slaughter houses! Why slaughter a horse you can sell? If the horse is more valuable alive than dead there are alternatives. People in the trade want to make money. All you can hope for is that his training, disposition and looks are worth more to someone than his hide and tallow. You can care and feel bad but at this point things are not in your control.

What you DO have now is wisdom. Never take anyone at face value when money is involved! This is a hard way to learn a lesson but at least you didn't totally lose out. You have two horses now! They might not be trained yet but that can be done. They are also probably much younger and more healthy than your previous horse.

You probably did also save these horses, if not for you they could have ended up being sold to some idiot or worse! A trained horse always has a much better chance of being sold than an untrained one. 3 year old horses who have not been handled properly are not worth much! Look at it this way, you might have saved TWO horses from slaughter! Either way just try to be thankful and know there are some very bad people in the world! Be glad this situation was not worse. If she had two horse why would she trade you one for slaughter purposes? Did your horse weigh more than both the mares combined. I wouldn't worry about a useful TB that was too much for you being sold to slaughter. I'd worry more about a young unbroke big bodied horse. If she so much wanted his papers, he wasn't going to the slaughter plant with them. I would stop worrying about him as he is gone to a new owner with his papers.

Worry about improving your horsemanship so you can be a good owner to the two you are now responsible for so they don't end up being a source of your worries in the future....Show more
