Painful cramp while running in upper rib cage near sternum?

I was halfway into my 5 mile run and I had such a painful cramp on my side I had to stop running. I tried to push through it, but as I kept running the cramp got worse and worse and I started having trouble breathing. Is there anything I can do to avoid these types of cramps? BTW, I am used to having shoulder cramps and lower side cramps that do not bother me when I run, but when this one affected my breathing and I had to stop.

Painful cramps & breathing problems you are describing sound exactly like "side stitches". People get these when they are either breathing incorrectly or are they are too out of breath. Has to do with your oxygen intake. good luck, slow down your pace & try to breathe a little more rhymatically,

I don't have any trouble with cramps, and I've read the above persons comment about breathing. I have a very good natural breathing pattern for distance, and it really helps me when I run distance. The trick is to breath in or out at every fourth step into your nose and out through your mouth. I find that I breath this way only when I run, for some reason. It lasts for me even when I run six miles. It feels like a habit. Hope this helps!

Just from walking so tough and over exerting yourself....subsequent time stretch earlier than you pass...it would be a cramped muscle. Also while you get performed check out hanging you arms above your head and inhaling deep a pair instances!
