My kids found an onion growing in my kitchen?

Question

Since we planted a small garden this year they added it to the garden. I was wondering (since I have never grown onion) if I can expect anything to come of it. Will it grow more onions this year or should I expect it to flower and get seeds? It seems to be flourishing (I expected it to rot). Will it grow more than one onion in the roots or is it just the one? Any other information or tips would be nice since this is the first time we planted a garden. If this matters we planted in mid March. It is a yellow onion that I bought from the grocery.

Onions are biennial......they flower the second season.  So your onion will probably grow and send up leaves. Then suddenly a flower head will appear.  The edible part underneath is lost, but what a great learning experience!

If you live in a fairly warm climate, it should grow. If you live in a cold climate, it may freeze in March or April if a frost hits. Onions produce one onion root which grows into a typical onion. If you leave it in the garden, it will produce a head containing many seeds. You can dry the head and plant the seeds next spring.

Many onions over time will sprout where ever you keep them.   I did this experiment once and got a whole lot of greens . The original onion that sprouted will rot.
