the banana plant is a herb the banana is a seed. but the most popular and probably most versatile fruit is a tomato.

I would have to say tomatoes! They are used a lot in cooking and they are also eaten by themselves.

I am sorry to tell you but a banana is a fruit.
The most popular fruit world wide would be the apple as it would be grown in the largest areas where any type of fruit grows, although there will be swathes of grounds where no foods will grow, and people starve on a daily basis.
