Why do women put their hair up for formal?

Consider this. In all glamor photos, hair is down. Take the upcoming Miss USA pageant. I have a friend competing, and if you go to the Miss USA site, all photos are hair down. Every man that I know says that hair down looks better (unless their spouse/significant other has just put their hair up and asks them what they think)...and then for formals, so many put their hair up? Why?

Guys who answer...your girlfriend/wife is not watching. What looks better, hair up or hair down?

Janel...great information. At least there is a reason. I disagree with the reasoning, as I think that the more formal should also be showcasing the hair. IMHO, the formal=up is outdated and needs to be changed.

Back in the old days hair used to be put up all the time to show that you were a lady.Putting your hair up for a formal is what makes it a formal.Leaving it down suggests it's a casual affair.Plus lots of gowns are better showcased when the hair is up.

I always prefer down....

Sometimes my friends wear their hair up even during everyday activities...sometimes even just lounging around the house.

I have no idea why hear up.
