How do I transplant a tree sprout to a bigger pot?

I have a red maple sprout that's about 2.5 to 3 inches tall. It's in a rather small pot at the moment and I want to transplant it into a bigger pot to allow growth. How do I do this without killing or harming the tree?

I would take the small pot and roll it around on it's side and try to get the entire root ball to come out in one piece. Place that into your larger pot and pack enough soil to fill the container. Water it and you should be fine. The less you hurt or fool with the roots the better.
Check out the site below, it's for larger trees actually but has good advice for you also.
Best of luck,
