It starts with a fat guy/smart guy/normal guy and the smart guy makes a way for them to travel to an alternate time. There they find out the normal guy has a wife but vanished in some war and the fat guy was arrested because in that world fat is illegal or something. Then theres an execution where everyone legally has to try to kill someone reported by the news. Also if it helps all the cars are the exactly the same and people just drive any available one.

This is a bit of a guess, but your description strongly reminds me of this film: Tempting Fate (1998 TV movie) starring Tate Donovan, Abraham Benrubi, Matt Craven, Philip Baker Hall, Grace Phillips , Philip Casnoff, Ming-Na Wen, John O'Hurley IMDb review: A brilliant scientist is disregarded by the scientific community as harebrained and foolish.
