can i use regular headphones with 4th generation ipod shuffle?

I bought a 4th gen ipod shuffle and loaded music on it but i cant get it to play through regular ear buds.

it should work with any headphones that have a 3.5mm jack. Either your headphones are bust or the headphone port is on the iPod
