New to running-what to do about shin splints?

Just started running. I am starting slow and just running about a 10th of a mile and walking a half mile twice a day. However, after just a week of doing this I am experiencing anterior shin splints (I have very flat feet). I am really starting to enjoy running and I am starting to see a bit of improvement in my stamina and breathing already. The shin splints are fairly mild and only hurt for a little while after a workout.

SO my question is:

Do I have to stop running to allow them to heal or is it ok to push through it?

I will be getting some better shoes ASAP. Other than that, anything else I can do to help with the shin splints?

I am going to go get some better shoes today--any tips on what to look for in a good shoe? Not looking to spend a ton of money as I am just getting started.

When you get shin splints, tape your shins tightly, and ice before and after workouts. You can continue doing what you normally do, as far as running goes, although your splints would obviously heal better if you didn't. That's all you can really do. Shin Splints are tough, they hurt, and take time to heal... Just tape and ice lots.

get orthodics for flat feet. it helps. also, it helps to tape your shins for them. and depending on what youre doing exercise for would depend on what i would suggest. i mean i run track so i just suck it up, but if your just walking/running to do it, then i would hold off. and yeah, make sure that you have good running shoes that are also light, have good arch and will fit snug (not tight, but tight enough so your feet wont rattle around in them. but i would probably continue if i were you. i mean walking 1/10 of a mile and walking another half 2 times a day isnt a lot. and walking is a lot less stressful on your legs than running anyways.
