The way the world cup works is it start with group play. 4 groups of 4. The 4 teams in each group play round robin, then the two teams with the best records in that group move on to the world cup quarterfinals. The U.S. lost to Sweden in group play but still got 2nd in their group so they moved on to the quarterfinals. Brazil went undefeated in their group, but lost in the quarterfinals to the U.S. so they were eliminated. Sweden also went undefeated in the group, but lost to Japan in the semi-finals. The U.S. still hasn't lost in the tournament so that's why they are still alive.
