August is the rainy season and the water quality in the Ganges would be very bad. Avoid bathing in the river during this season.

If you find little rain, go to upstream ghats that are beyond the cremation ground of Harishchandra Ghat. I used to bathe on Munshi Ghat which is just near to famous Dashshwamedha Ghat. You won't find any corpses there because its upstream.

Ganga water is flowing water, but to take a bath, one generally is close to the banks. The water plants and weeds close to the river bank block water flow and so you'll find unwanted stuff like dried garlands, plastic bags etc floating close to the bank. Also, in the olden days, there used to be fewer people having a dip. Now there are crowds of them. These are people who believe that a dip in the Ganges is a must in the holy city of Varanasi. But if you are doubtful about the safety of the water, you'll not enjoy the dip and you may fall sick with the thought that you've had a bath in polluted water.

Yes..... it is always safe. Ganga is always pure , even if you might think there is pollution.
I think your consciousness is whats important , if you believe Ganga to be pure no problem ,
If you don't and there may be some sign of pollution , problem , our minds are very powerful .

Most forms of water pollutants are only harmful when ingested anyway . Ganges is SAFE !
