Shakespeare had many sonnets, but there were some that were not so great and some that were great. What was it that made the sonnet not so great as the popular ones?

Great, or popular in a contemporary sense is probly relative, but the man was a genius on so many levels, and emulated still after 500 years. I try to not read him, other than his plays, of which 12th night is my favorite.
