You would probably be more likely to hurt them, as cutting against the grain is for extremely close shaves.

The length of hair will be be a shorter When clipping a dog going against the grain you want to stretch the skin for a smooth shave abd to prevent the skin bunching up and cutting them. The hair will cut 2 steps shorter when using a blade so 7 will cut like a 10. If # means nothing to you, about half the length.

I worry when people groom dogs at home because I've seen many accidents and the dog is the one who really suffers so not to encourage but in hopes to help I do have to say
*Shave a clean dog will look best. If matted of 2 much hair shave first bathe then smooth coat. If the hair looks choppy, they are probably not clean.
*The blades can get hot and fast, enough to blister your skin so Imagine how you dog feels if u slowly run it over his skin. Touch the blade on the inside of UR forearm often to test the temprature. Use coolant and switch blades. and trust me, it's gonna be unbearable before they'll show it.
*never use scissors on matts
*if youre not sure you can do something or you dog struggles, cut you losses go to the vet
*And for gods sake IF YOU CUT THEM TAKE EM TO THE VET You owe them that and the longer you wait the worse it will get...Show more

It depends how close you are clipping. As a vet nurse clipping for surgical sites I always clip with the grain and when thats short as it will go I go against the grain. If its just for grooming then I guess its easier to go with the grain otherwise you might cut it shorter than you wanted. It doesn't actually affect the hair itself....Show more
