what am i doing wrong with my animals on Harvest Moon?

I have bought the animals, taken care of them...ie feed them and groom, ect. But it seems that beside their health or stress bar, there is a skull next to them. And it happens when I get a new one too. It comes to the house and the board shows a skull. So I'm totally lost. What am I doing wrong?

the only thing i can think of is that they are sick. On the harvest moon game i play the skull shows when they are sick. hope this helps
