In Harvest Moon DS, how does one improve an animal's heart rating?

Animals I have bred start with 2 hearts but never increase. I use the touch glove every day to pet (usually get a green heart in bottom left of screen and 3 hearts at the top) and brush (usually over 5000 points) but the hearts on their profile never go up. What am I doing wrong or need to do differently?

    breed the animal with two hearts, use the brush on the baby and talk to it every day also let it outside on sunny days

    You gotta keep on doing this everyday.

    Or just ignore the pets.

    focus on farming.
