Is this possibly the finest work for solo Cello since J.S Bach?

Just discovered this over the weekend, I've clearly been missing out..
Zoltán Kodály's Sonata for Cello, Opus 8.

@Del_: Britten's 3rd Suite especially is simply staggering, there's an intensity I didn't find in the other two. I don't know those you reference by Weinberg, thanks for the links I'll be sure to listen later ( :

Ahh - the piece so many cellists fear (and rightly so!). No doubt it's ONE of the great solo cello works - certainly in the top three behind the Bach suites. However, I'd be hard pushed to choose this over the Britten solo cello suites written for Rostropovich.

Suite 1 starts here: http://youtu.be/gP3tkldJOqY
Suite 2 starts here: http://youtu.be/SS8klvmFMdc

Bloch's 3 solo suites are also very fine: http://youtu.be/4NcEluMYz6Q

All that having been said, I would have to give my top vote to the four staggering solo cello sonatas by Mieczysław Weinberg (Moisei/Moshe Vainberg).
