Is this possibly the finest work for solo Cello since J.S Bach?

Ahh - the piece so many cellists fear (and rightly so!). No doubt it's ONE of the great solo cello works - certainly in the top three behind the Bach suites. However, I'd be hard pushed to choose this over the Britten solo cello suites written for Rostropovich.
