How do I find out the history of my house?

We bought a 105 year old house recently.  We are doing major renovation to the house and have discovered the house was in a fire.  We have already gone to the historical society in town to try to get information about the fire, but they have nothing.  Does anyone have any recommendations to try to find out about the fire.  We know the fire was before 1955, because the people we bought the house from bought the house in 55 and they did not know about the fire.

Look at your local and regional newspaper, if they have been around for awhile, even under different names, they would have archives of their past editions.  You may have to pay for copies or worse spend hours searching through digital files or even worse microfiche and microfilm.  Also you can check with the Fire Marshall, if there was suspected arson there would be an investigation file on record somewhere.  This is going to be a hard one because your going to have to spend a lot of time looking for this information.

The unfortunate thing about your situation is that unless there was some kind of scandal regarding the fire your probably not going to find anything.

Also look into your county (parish or regional) records, that will give the history of ownership on the house. From there you can locate possible descendants, there is more word of mouth history passed on.

The county courthouse where the taxes were paid will have the lot description and history.
